Green Burial

A green burial is a cremation alternative, and a viable alternative to "traditional" burial practices in the United States. It is an earth friendly option when considering burial vs cremation. Many families choose cremation because it's seen as more environmentally friendly than traditional burial. The simplicity of a green burial is in tune with nature and need not be expensive

What is a Green Burial?

Simple and natural. Green burial, or natural burial, ensure the burial site remains as natural as possible in all respects. Interment of the bodies is done in a biodegradable casket, shroud, or a favorite blanket. No embalming fluid, no concrete vaults.

Why Have a Green Burial?

It is clear that nature has intended that our bodies be reunited with the earth. All organisms that have lived, have died and returned to the soil...only to be recycled into new life. Constant microbial activity in the soil breaks everything down. Nature creates no waste. Everything is recycled. In keeping with your personal values, a natural burial site for you, family, even pets, promotes growth of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, in turn bringing birds and other wildlife to the area. Water is not wasted, nor are pesticides and herbicides used in attempts to control nature. Instead, a green cemetery allows nature take it's course. Planting native trees, shrubs and flowers in your loved one's honor promotes habitat restoration. To encourage land preservation, a green cemetery grants a conservation easement for the burial site.

The Green Burial Plan Only at $1,995

According to the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), a not-for-profit trade group representing funeral service professionals, a green burial occurs when "the body is buried, without embalming, in a natural setting; any shroud or casket that is used must be biodegradable, nontoxic, and of sustainable material; traditional standing headstones are not permitted. Instead, flat rocks, plants or trees may serve as grave markers."

NFDA adds that green burial "may also simply mean burial without embalming, in a biodegradable casket without a vault, when permitted by a cemetery."

This package includes the basic service of the funeral director and staff, transfer of the deceased to the funeral home within a 20 mile radius, a biodegradable shroud, hearse for service, a committal service, and if desired, a Memorial Tribute DVD, and a Memorial Candle, attention to all details including filing of forms with government offices, preparation of obituaries and handling of floral tributes. Other items to be considered may include any/or all cash advances such as cemetery fees, newspaper fees, clergy costs, flowers, certified copies of the death certificates.

In this case it is a stand-alone event. This charge of $1,995.00 does not include: embalming, a casket, use of facilities or staff for any visitation or ceremony, public or private, prior to interment. If embalming using fluids consistent with green burial standards the fee would be added to the $1,995.00. If the cemetery requires a bio-degradable casket, the fee will be added to the $1,995.00.

Green Cemeteries to consider are:

  1. Penn Forest Cemetery in Verona
  2. St. Francis of Assisi green burial section, in a quiet meadow behind Holy Savior Catholic Cemetery off Bakerstown Road in Pine and Richland Townships
  3. Or any other cemetery offering Green Burial
